It's been 1 year!!
THURSDAY
Can you believe it? I know I can't! Today it is 1 year to the date since my PAO last year. The time just flies by so quickly.
My scar has healed really well and whilst it's quite long, it's also very neat and just sits under the top of most of my pants, shorts & skirts. If I was to wear bathers you'd definitely see the top and bottom of the scar, but I tend to wear boardshorts over my bathers, so it's not a problem.
I wear all kinds of shoes now, I walk for quite a long time and can run as well (although I mostly choose not too) and I can sit for long periods without any problems.
Really the only adjustment I have had to make recently, is the purchase of a foam overlay to go over my innerspring mattress. It's not that the mattress was cheap or old or anything. It was medium priced, medium quality and quite comfy before my op, but post-op I hadn't been able to lie on my op side without the sensation of feeling like I could feel the springs in the mattress pressing into my side. It was very weird.
So I invested in a foam overlay for our mattress and I haven't looked back since. Now I can sleep anyway I like. I spoke to my Grandma who had a hip replacement a few years back and she said she had a similar problem with lying on her op side and they ended up purchasing a "pillow top" mattress and now she's fine.
If anything it's just my own cautious-ness that holds me back now. I'm nervous about damaging an already fragile hip. That being said it was some 6 months ago that my hip surgeon told me my hip could withstand the rigours of pregnancy and labour, so I'm sure there's not too many things I could do that would be more strenuous on it than that. I guess I worry about it needlessly sometimes!! :)
Well, that's about all that I have for this update. I've taken another photo for you, which is below. Sorry the lighting wasn't great!
Hope you're all well and I'd love to hear from anyone else on how they're going - sjc1981@hotmail.com
All the best!

It's amazing actually how quickly a year can go by. I hope it all just keeps getting better and stronger. I have spoken to some women who say that even up to two years post surgery they still see improvements.
Take care
